details for Friday - pickup, return time, doors, etc

Good afternoon parents!

With our show fast approaching, I wanted to send out details about exactly how Friday will work:

  1. camp will run the same hours as always, 9am - 3:30pm.
  2. please pick your child up as close to 3:30 as possible
  3. in order to give our Jitterbugs a chance to relax and have some supper, we are asking that they be back at the Firehall again for 5:15pm on Friday
  4. doors for the show open at 5:30pm
  5. our show is at 6pm!
to reiterate about costumes:
  • please send your child to the Firehall at 5:15 dressed in a grey t-shirt (no logos - inside is fine) and dark bottoms
  • footwear needs to be secure and not easy to trip over. no flip-flops please
Hope that is all clear; please let me know if there anything I may have missed.
Thank you!

WILD WATER WEDNESDAY!

Good morning Jitterbugs families!

Pretty unbelievably, today is our last day of regular classes for third session (and indeed of 2016)! Tomorrow is a pretty exciting day in Jitterbug land because it's the first time we will be putting all of the pieces together into an entire show! Then we'll have some play time, a break, a snack, do it all again, and THEN we head up to the splash pad (behind the Ancaster library; see map here) for

...which is perfect given the temperature this week!

To make it a safe and fun excursion, here is what we need from you:
  • please send your child to camp already in their swimsuit. We will not be helping kids change into our out of swimsuits, so unless they are staying for aftercare (in which case they'll be given a chance to change) we will be sending them home in what they wore to the splash pad
  • please send your child to camp with sunscreen already applied. By the time we are ready to head out, sunscreen will need to be reapplied, but this is just an extra safety measure. If your child has any allergies to specific products, please ensure you send their own sunscreen with them for application; otherwise we do have some sunscreen here which we will apply before leaving
  • also, please send them with a hat, lots of water, their usual snack, and a towel
  • Also tomorrow before we go we will be distributing our summer camp shirts so that all of the Jitterbugs can be easily identified while we are there. We should be back at the Firehall again for around 3pm, but if you want to come and meet your child at the splashpad before that we can also dismiss them directly from there if you prefer; just come and find a staff member and make sure they are officially signed out

Hope that all makes sense; please let me or any of the staff know if you have any questions!
   Thanks

tickets, costumes, and WEDNESDAY (!!)

Good morning Jitterbugs families!

This morning I wanted to lay out some details for the rest of the week:

   1) today and tomorrow are our last days of regular classes. We will be polishing up the various components of the show in order to smash them all together on Wednesday into our first full run-throughs of the whole play!

   2) after two complete run-throughs that day, we will be gathering up all of our stuff and heading up to the splash pad (behind the Ancaster library, just a block south) for WILD WATER WEDNESDAY! stay tuned for detailed instructions about how that will work.

   3) TICKETS will be available as of Wednesday. You will receive two complimentary ones per child (stamped on the back to allow admission to the first 3 or 4 rows of the theatre), and then additional tickets may be purchased either ahead of time or at the door for $2 each (while supplies last) - cash only please. There is an order form online, but I have a much simpler system in-house so just come and talk to me (or whoever is handling tickets at that point) and I'll mark down how many tickets you need.

   4) in terms of costume requirements for the show, we need each of our Jitterbugs to be wearing a grey (T-) shirt, dark bottoms (shorts are fine), and shoes that will stay securely attached to their feet (i.e. no flip-flops or the like).

As always if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.

Looking forward to an amazing last week of Jitterbugs 2016~!

music and forms

Good afternoon Jitterbugs parents!

We are almost at the end of your first week and your kids have been working so hard learning all of the material for the show!

Just wanted to direct your attention to the sidebar at the right of this blog, where all the music we are using is posted, as well as ticket and DVD order forms for the program.

tickets:

  • you will receive two complimentary tickets per child for the show, and these will be stamped on the back to give you priority access to the front rows of the theatre. additional general admission tickets will be available for $2 each on a first-come first-served basis. The theatre seats 120 so while it is unlikely we will sell out, it is always a possibility!
DVDs:
  • in previous years we have made DVDs available for purchase at a cost of $10 apiece
  • this summer, once the camp video is done, a link to the digital download will be sent to all families.
  • IF you would like a hard copy of the DVD rather than a digital one, please download and print out the form, and bring it with $10 (cash only) to us. DVDs will be mailed out in 6-8 weeks once they have finished being produced and edited.
Happy Thursday!

outdoor play policy

Good morning parents!

After a couple conversations with parents I just wanted to send a quick note to explain our policy about outside play time:

  • while as a day-camp operating only 6 weeks out of the school year we are not bound to provincial legislation to anywhere near the same degree as daycares or schools, nevertheless for the sake of our campers we endeavour to heed the current rules applied to such daycare providers
  • under the previous Day Nurseries Act (repealed Aug 31, 2015) childcare providers were mandated to keep children inside once the outdoor temperature reached 26 degrees celsius or higher (the act that replaced that one, the Child Care & Early Years Act, inexplicably does not specify an outdoor temperature). That being the case, while we really love playing outside when we can, for the most part this summer we have done our group activities inside and not out-of-doors due to the heat
  • the exception to the above is the second Wednesday of our program, Wild Water Wednesday, on which we take the kids up the splash pad behind the Ancaster Library to play in the water. Being careful to keep them hydrated and covered in sunscreen, we are confident that the water keeps them from getting overheated.
If you have any further questions or concerns, however, please don't hesitate to come and talk with me; I'd be happy to chat.

Happy Tuesday!

DETAILS!

Good morning parents!

I had intended to send this out yesterday but caught up (and completely soaked) in our Wild Wednesday!

Our show is tomorrow (how did that happen so quickly??) and so here are some things you need to know:

  1. Jitterbugs will run as normal tomorrow from 9am - 3:30pm.
  2. In order to allow our campers time to get home and have supper, we are asking that they be back at the Firehall for 5:15pm
  3. Doors for the theatre will open at 5:30pm
  4. Our SHOW is at 6pm and will run about 40-45 mins, including the presentation of certificates at the end
  5. if possible we'd like our campers to come back tomorrow dressed for the show in a grey t-shirt (inside out to hide a logo is fine) and dark pants or shorts.
  6. footwear: so that they can dance and move freely onstage. please make sure your child has shoes on that will not come off easily. Sandals are okay as long as they are securely fastened, but flip-flops are not allowed.
Also we have begun giving tickets out already. If you haven't got yours yet please make sure you come find me (or another staff member) and grab them. There are still tickets available for sale and there may be some left at the door, but it's also possible we'll sell out so if you want to make sure you get some buy them ahead of time!

Thanks; we\re really excited to put our show on for you...!

Wild Water Wednesday

Good morning Jitterbugs families!

Your kids may have told you excitedly already, but tomorrow is a big day! On top of the departure from our regular class schedule in order to do a first full runthrough of our show (which is going to be amazing ~ your kids are doing so well!), we'll be doing crafts, a second runthrough, and THEN...

...meaning we are all going to troupe en masse up to the splash pad behind the Ancaster library for a couple of hours of outdoor play!

This will a) make sure we have more time to play and don't have to spend time applying it for them and b) make sure that we don't apply anything that they might react to. We do have some sunscreen here for "emergencies" but obviously it would be better if we didn't have to use it
  • also, please send them with a hat, lots of water, they usual snack, and a towel

Also tomorrow before we go we will be distributing our summer camp shirts so that all of the Jitterbugs can be easily identified while we are there. We should be back at the Firehall again for around 3pm, but if you want to come and meet your child at the splashpad before that we can also dismiss them directly from there if you prefer.

Hope that all makes sense; please let me or any of the staff know if you have any questions!
Thanks

tickets and DVDs!

Good afternoon parents:

This second post today is to let you know about how we handle tickets and DVDs for the program (order forms for which can be found in the sidebar of this blog):

Tickets:

  • each child will receive two complimentary tickets to the 6pm show on Friday. Stamped with the Jitterbugs logo, these tickets grant priority seating in the first 4-5 rows of the theatre.
  • additional tickets may be purchased ahead of time  at pickup or dropoff (or at the door while supplies last) for $2 each and are general admission to the rest of the theatre
  • the capacity of the theatre is 120 so we have room for family and friends, but tickets will be first-come-first-serve...!
  • we will have tickets ready for pickup by Thursday at the latest
DVDs:

  • this year instead of collecting DVD order forms we will be sending out a weblink to a downloadable version of the camp video, which will include all kinds of behind the scenes footage, a photo montage, and the entire final show.
  • IF you wish to purchase an actual physical DVD the cost will be $10; the form is available for download on the right ---->

Additionally:
  • doors open at 5:30
  • kids will be dismissed at 3:30 as usual but need to be back at the Firehall for 5:15pm
...Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thanks!

Jitterbugs REDUX

Good morning Jitterbugs parents!

As you may be aware, this is the first summer we have been running Jitterbugs as a full-day program, and as with any change this has meant a little bit of adjustment.

That being the case, it turns out we still have a few spots available for our 3rd session, and so if your child is desperately missing camp and you think they might love coming back again for a second time this summer, then for the first (and likely only) time, we are making signup available to them so they can come and do it all again with a whole new group of kids! Session 3 starts next Monday, August 1st and runs until August 12th

As much as possible, we will also try to move them into a different age group from the one they were previously in so that some of the show material they learn will be different too.

Hope to see some familiar faces next week!

   Thanks

Stage 2 Talent Show & notes for next week!

Hello Jitterbugs families!

Can you believe it's already the end of week one? It has flown by and your kids have already learned SO much!

Today was a slightly different format than our regular daily schedule: we had our first class and group activity, including our first full-group rehearsal of music and dance for the show. After our morning snack break, though, we ran the next two classes back-to-back in order to be able to get downstairs in time for the Stage 2 talent show!

The Jitterbugs were an excellent audience and seemed to really enjoy all the acts (musical instruments, dance routines, songs, karate, magic...!) - ask them which was their favourite!

Next week we will spend Monday and Tuesday putting the finishing touches on all the components of the show (look for possible homework in your camper's bag!), and then Wednesday the rubber really hits the road: we run our show for the first time from end-to-end, which is a big accomplishment for all of us! So, to celebrate, we will then be walking en masse up to the splash pad behind the Ancaster Library for Wild Water Wednesday! We'll give you more details next week.

Thanks so much for entrusting your lovely and talented kids to us; we love our jobs!
Mr. Ben and the Jitterbugs Team!

Meet the Staff

Good afternoon parents!

By this point in the session, your children have likely already got to know all of our discipline heads and associates, along with me and our session volunteer, but I thought you also might like to know what amazing people we have hired for the summer...!

Our Head Instructors are experts in their discipline, and have a ton of experience working with Jitterbug-aged kids:

Samantha Rutherford: Music Head             Laura Bottrell: Dance Head

Kat Baranowski: Dance Head

Our Associates are paired up with one of our groups of same-aged Jitterbugs and taskr them around to all of our various classes and activities:

Ashlyn Richard: Bigs (Gr.1&2)                  Zoe Fiddes: Bites (SK&Gr.1)

Cathy Huang: Bits (JK & SK)

We also have an amazing and dedicated volunteer who picks up all the slack, including making our beautiful banners, creating all kinds of crafts, doing some of our admin work, and playing with the kids!

Cailey Pelletier: Volunteer sessions 1&2

One unrelated note: with the possibility that it may be cool enough for us to play outside in the morning, please send your child to camp with sunscreen applied every day; this will save us a ton of time applying it before our group time. Thanks so much!

Happy Wednesday!

sunny days....

Good afternoon parents!

Today because it was not melting-pot hot we walked en masse over to our sister site at Memorial High School (just across the road) to play outside for our first full-camp group activity of the day. We brought frisbees, balls, hula hoops, and a staff full of creative fun ideas!

Under the Day Nurseries Act once the temperature goes above 25 degrees C we cannot go outside, so given the forecast for the rest of the week we may end up being inside a whole lot, but we are ready for anything!

Each day we also have time for free play, including costumes, play dough, trains, puppets, cars, drawing, imaginative play in our castle....

and in our first day of Drama we spent time thinking of and trying to draw different feelings...!

Happy Tuesday!

SESSION TWO!!

Good morning Jitterbugs families!

Thank you so much for enrolling in our second session of Jitterbugs this summer - we are so excited to have your kids with us for the next two weeks!

As I have done in other summers, I will be maintaining a blog for the session to keep you up-to-date with any important notices, changes, or other things you need to know. The address is http://jitterbugs2016.blogspot.ca/ and I will try to send out a new email with every update, but check back often!

Here's our first: As with all school programs, in order to keep all of our campers safe, snacks sent with your children MUST be completely nut-free. We do have a couple children this session with severe nut allergies and so we ask that you would be extra-vigilant in this regard. The main culprit is granola bars - even traces of nuts are not allowed - so please check the ingredients on anything you suspect might contain any nuts or traces thereof. If we do find an item that has nuts in it, we will promptly replace it with a nut-free snack that we have on-hand for just such an eventuality and will dispose of the offending snack item. We thank you for your cooperation on this one.

Finally, if you have any questions or concerns at any time, please feel free to email me or come find me at pickup or dropoff.

   Happy Monday!

Last minute details

Good last morning of camp Jitterbugs families!

We have had a few questions from parents about the details for tonight so I thought I'd put them all in one place:

  1. we'd like kids to be wearing a grey t-shirt with dark bottoms for the show
  2. Footwear: please send your kids in shoes in which they can dance and move easily; no flipflops please.
  3. pickup is at 3:30 as usual, but then we're asking Jitterbugs to be back at the Firehall for 5:15 in order to be ready for the show at 6
  4. doors will open at 5:30. If you have your complimentary tickets that gives you access to the first 3 or 4 rows (as marked) of the theatre. Unmarked tickets are general admission behind those reserved seats. Other kids who are coming in to see the show do need a ticket ($2 ea) but may sit on the floor in front of the front row of seats to make sure they can see.
  5. If you have a child in aftercare and haven't been able to retrieve your complimentary tickets yet, we will make sure they are marked and waiting for you at the "box office" (i.e. small table in the lobby).
Please let me know you have any other questions or concerns.
Thanks so much for lending us your uber-talented kids this session; we're excited to show the fruiuts of all our hard work this evening!

today was huge!

Hello Jitterbugs families!

If your kids seem a little tired after their day at Jitterbugs, it would not come as a surprise: Today was such a big day! We ran the whole show all the way through, stopped to make ourselves crowns, had snack and free play, ran the entire show a second time, then walked up to the splash pad for Wild Water Wednesday! We had such a great time all around and your kids are going to do so well on stage on Friday!

   A quick couple of notes:
  1. costume: please bring your child back to the theatre on Friday for 5:15pm (the show is at 6) dressed in a grey t-shirt and black or dark bottoms.
  2. tickets: the tickets are printed and we will start handing them out tomorrow at dropoff and pickup. You get two complimentary ones per child and can purchase additional ones for $2 apiece
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to talk to me or send me an email
   Happy Wednesday!

WWW note for aftercare kids

Good morning!

A quick note about tomorrow: if your child is in aftercare, they will be given the opportunity to change into dry clothes once we get back from the splash pad. The firehall tends to be a little chilly; we don't your kids turning into popsicles!

   Thanks

Wild Water Wednesday this week!

Good afternoon parents!

This is going to be an exciting second week of camp! Whereas the routine was fairly steady from one day to the next in the first week, this week it's about to get changed up a lot:

Monday and Tuesday: regular classes and schedule
Wednesday: our first full runthrough of the show, activities, and then Wild Water Wednesday! (see note                                    below), crafting activity
Thursday: group rehearsals, finishing up crafts, second full runthrough
Friday: we put the show on onstage downstairs for the big kids! ...then sit to become the audience                     for their show, and then after snack break run a full and final Dress Rehearsal on the                             stage...!

Wild Water Wednesday!

...after an intense morning putting our show together for the first time, we have some crafts planned, will spend some time putting finishing touches on the show, and then we are going to walk as a group up to the splash pad behind the Ancaster Library for a couple of hours of fun in the water. That being the case, here are some special instructions for that day!
    1. please send your Jitterbug to camp already wearing their swimsuit (we will not be helping them change either into or out of swimwear)
    2. please make sure your Jitterbug already has sunscreen applied
    3. please send your Jitterbug with a hat and a towel
We plan to be at the park & splashpad from 1:00 - 2:45pm, staying there for our snack whenever the kids get hungry (i.e. not necessarily all at the same time), and then we'll head back to the Firehall for about 3pm for a little bit of free play and pick-up.

It's supposed to be very hot the rest of the week, so we'll be inside all day except for that chunk of time at the splash pad.

   Happy Monday!

end of week one - ?!?

Good morning Jitterbugs families!

Rather unbelievably, it's the end of week 1 already...! Your kids have been hard at work learning their songs, dances, and drama pieces for our show, and in between spending lots of time making new friends and doing all kinds of fun activities!

Here are some of the emotions the kids identified and drew in drama...

here's some free play time in our main room:

and here's a (completely child-directed and thought up) flow chart of the sounds different instruments make and the things they make them think of (talk about abstract thinking!):

order forms and show time

Good morning parents!

After some discussion with our other programs and within our own ranks, we have decided that our Jitterbugs show will be at 6pm on the final Friday of camp. This should give kids a chance to get home, relax, have some dinner, and recharge a bit before coming back to the theatre for 5:30 sharp.

In the sidebar of this blog you will find links to order forms for tickets for the show as well as for DVDs.

TICKETS:

  • each family will receive two complimentary tickets per child. These will be stamped on the back and will give you access to the first few rows of the theatre
  • additional tickets may be purchased either ahead of time or at the door (while supplies / seats last!) for $2 apiece. Please make sure you get your tickets before the show (Friday at regular pickup time at the latest).
DVDs:
  • a digital version of the camp DVD (which includes the show but also alllll kinds of behind-the-scenes and day-to-day footage) will be available for FREE to download a few weeks after camp
  • However, if you wish to purchase an actual physical copy of the DVD, please fill in the form (to the right) and bring in $10 cash per DVD. These will be mailed out 6-8 weeks after the end of camp (to allow for editing etc.).
To give you some sense of what that might look like, here is an example of one of our videos from a few years ago:

Stay tuned for more info over the next few days about costume and timing etc.

Day The Second!

Good afternoon parents!

Camp is to an amazing start and our new full-day format seems to be an easy comfortable shift for both campers and staff!

Yesterday morning for our group activity it was cool enough not to have to stay inside, so we trotted over to Memorial High School across the street to get some fresh air, play some games, and make this beautiful mural!

On days like today, however, when the mercury starts to rise, we will be staying in, playing games, singing songs, doing crafts, reading books, and all kinds of other fun stuff that our staff have up their creative sleeves.

A note about show time: in order to allow campers time to go home, relax, unwind, and have some supper, we are considering changing our show time to 6pm from 5pm on Friday. We think this may be a better scenario in terms of routine and energy levels. If you have any strong concerns with this change, however, please come talk to me about them.

   Thanks and happy Tuesday!

Jitterbugs beginneth!!

Hear ye hear ye! We have now embarked on The Fabled and Legendarie Jitterbugse Sumer Programme of the year of our Lord two-thousand and sixteen, and yea there is much to relay to you!

We have already been told of a great scaly beast named Ned, and there be rumoures of all manner of  other magickal creatures near the theatre kingdomme, so we are gladde of the brave youthes who have now arrived to guard our lande against invasions and intrusions!

It is with great excitement and anticipation that I welcome you to the Stage 2 Jitterbugs Performing Arts Program! We have been buzzing around making preparations for our new and returning Jitterbugs. We are so happy to have your little ones with us for this session. We have an amazing lineup of highly qualified instructors who are dedicated to sharing their passion for the arts with your Jitterbug!

My name is Ben Bowen and I'm back for my fifth summer as Program Coordinator with Jitterbugs. We've been working really hard to get ready for all the adventures we'll have together this summer – we're so excited to see you!

Stay tuned to this blog for updates and posts about our day-to-day activities, and for important news and reminders about stuff coming up.

PROGRAMMING INFORMATION

To review, our little Jitterbugs have been divided into three groups. Each group will experience dancing, singing, acting and crafting, resulting in their very own theatre production. The productions are always on the last FRIDAY of camp at 5:00 pm located on-site in the theatre.
Camp will be held at our permanent location – The Old Firehall Arts Center at 334 Wilson Street. Because it is also home to a municipal parking lot, we would ask that all parents be extremely careful when dropping off and picking up their children as the parking lot can get quite full. (Additional parking can be found on the street, and the closest side street, Church Street.)
To ensure that all our little Jitterbugs have a fun and safe time at camp, there are a few things we would like to bring to your attention:

  • Please take a few extra minutes to register your child’s attendance in the lobby downstairs on DAY ONE only
  • If there is an absence, change in pick-up arrangements or anything we should be aware of, please phone (905) 304-TUNE (8863) before 8:45am. We also check messages at the end of camp (3:30pm)
  • During camp we will use a sign-in procedure for all campers. This is to ensure that all children arrive and leave safely with their appropriate caregiver. Please be sure that a staff member greets you and records your child’s name. The camp arrival time is 9:00 am and departure is 3:30pm. The room will be open only 15 minutes prior to start time (8:45 am). We ask that all parents pick up their children promptly by 3:45pm.
  • A contract for babysitting was mailed to you with your registration. Should you require care outside of these hours, please fill this out and return it on the first day of camp. We may not be able to accommodate last minute requests.
  • Please send enough food each day for our two nutrition breaks. Since many of our campers have severe peanut allergies, please do not pack any peanut or nut products.
  • Please remember to apply sunblock on your child before he or she arrives each day, and to pack sun block and sun hats.
  • We ask that all campers wear loose and comfortable clothing that you wouldn’t mind getting a little mucked up (please no jeans). The building is air-conditioned and therefore you will probably want to send campers in layered clothing.

Our goal is to provide a complete theatre experience in singing, acting, dancing, and prop development. We will divide our campers into three small groups who will rotate through the day to classes in music, drama, and dance, as well as various group activities led by our dedicated instructors. There is also some collective time where the entire group participates in an activity as well as creative exploration playtime, where they can explore activities that have sparked their interest.

Here is a sample schedule so that you get a sense of what an average day at camp will look like.

On this day, please send your child already dressed in their bathing suit, with a hat and sunscreen already applied with your camper. Please note: we will not be changing your children out of their swimsuits, but instead will send try to make sure we get back from the splash pad at the same time as you are arriving to pick them up. Our staff will remind you about Wild Water Wednesdays the day before during Drop-Off and Pick-Up times.

On behalf of the Stage 2 summer staff, we thank you for enrolling your child into the Jitterbug program and we are looking forward to dancing, singing, acting, and crafting with your children...!

Sincerely,

Ben Bowen
